Plante Moran Internship

Over the summer of 2022, I was hired as a state and local tax intern at Plante Moran. My job duties included preparing corporate tax returns, resolving issues regarding state and local taxes, and researching tax issues and giving presentations on these issues. Some of the goals that I had going into the internship were to develop my soft skills and start to apply what I had learned in my accounting classes to my professional career.

I learned several important concepts from my internship that I will apply in my future professional career. The lesson that stuck with me the most is to ask questions if you get stuck – and that this advice doesn’t apply to just new workers. I was a bit stubborn when it came to trying to find solutions on my own. This turned issues that could have been solved with a quick 2-minute discussion into a much longer period of time of me trying different ideas to resolve the discrepancies myself. I was told that even the office managing partner asks his teammates for a refresher on accounting topics he may not have touched in a while.

I have documented my experience as a state and local tax intern through weekly journal entries on this page, where I have asked myself the following questions:

  1. What did I learn this week?

  2. In the future, how could I use what I learned this week to do better?

  3. How well did I communicate with other professionals this week? What did I do well? What could I have done better?
