Week of 6/20/2022

What did I learn this week?

I started working on state tax returns this week, and I learned that each state has a different way of apportioning taxable income (the process of determining what share of income they can tax). These methods can also change from year to year. Additionally, my team showed me tricks and shortcuts in the accounting software that were not covered in the training.

In the future, how could I use what I learned this week to do better?

As I now know that each state has different methods of determining taxable income, I should try to learn the methods for as many as I can to widen my breadth. The accounting software tricks that my team showed me seemed to be incredibly useful and time-saving, so I will implement them in future projects.

How well did I communicate with other professionals this week? What did I do well? What could I have done better?

Continuing from last week, I introduced myself to more of the office and I felt that I was getting more confident talking to my new coworkers (and especially my direct supervisor). There was a small issue: while I was working on this week's project, I held all of my questions until I had finished with the work I could do myself. I felt that this could have been done more efficiently by asking questions with quick answers when they came up.
